The Dialectics of COVID 19: From Authoritarianism to Utopia? (Scientific Abstract)
Wider research context
The world is infected. Not only by the COVID 19 (C 19), but also by corona-phobia, leading to political consequences which could have a dramatic impact on the social, political, and cultural life. Considering that health narratives in the context of disease control always entail a risk of authoritarian abuse, the project addresses the problem that the global health crisis could be instrumentalized by populists.
Hypotheses/research questions /objectives
For decades, various democracies have been confronted by a growing authoritarian backlash and reactionary populism in both national and global contexts, which could solidify in the horizon of contemporary biopolitical crisis management. The study raises the question whether the national and global corona crisis-management increases authoritarian desires in society and leads to a new form of ideology that could be qualified as necro-political populism. Seen from a dialectical perspective, the global health crisis can provide an opportunity for political and societal learning processes. The project further aims to investigate theoretically under what conditions the corona pandemic could re-open spheres of utopian imagination based on societal critiques. The thesis is that civic scandalizations can be progressive if they take the form of performative negation-practices that follow a strategy of self-empowerment. This is to address civic practices that allow reworking the trauma of ideological violence. Against this background the study refers to contemporary utopian-theoretical debates in the (queer-)feminist context and questions if ideological interpellations can be subverted by dystopian storytelling and performances.
Approach/methods
The transdisciplinary project is located on the intersection of psychoanalysis, cultural theory and political philosophy and seeks to develop a psychoanalytically informed critical theory that reflects theoretically and methodologically on the origins and effects of authoritarian populism associated with the pandemic. Taking a dialectical perspective, the study also outlooks for societal dynamics that could counteract these developments. The expectation is that a psychoanalytically informed critical theory can like no other social theory inform about the affectual and unconscious societal dynamics triggered by C 19.
Level of originality/innovation
What is new is that the study focuses theoretically on processes of subjectification. It seeks to examine in perspective of a psychoanalytically informed critical theory the partly unconscious effects of ideological interpellations on the formation of desires for recognition. The innovative turn is to demonstrate that psychoanalysis can be amplified as a critical theory and as ideology-critical methodology that allows to grasp the current authoritarian backlash in its structural depth dimension and to identify utopian potentials of the current global health crisis.
